Carl and Sarah – A Downtown Austin Engagement Session

October 8, 2018 by Josh Baker

Carl and Sarah met while running on the Rogue Elite team a few years back. They no longer live in Austin, but wanted their engagement photos to be a tour of some of their favorite Austin spots. I grabbed my gear and headed out with them for some downtown Austin engagement photo fun.

Downtown Austin Engagement

This one is so Austin it is pretty much obligatory on a downtown Austin engagement shoot. Done!

Zilker Park and the Long Center

Things kicked off for real down at Zilker park along the town lake water front. Austin’s skyline has changed a lot over the last few years and the cranes visible among the towers suggest that it isn’t slowing down. Running along the river (as Carl and Sarah so frequently did), they witnessed that change on a day by day basis one run at a time.

The hill beside the Long Center provides a clear view of downtown during sunset. It makes a nice location for photos of the couple with the ever changing Austin skyline.

Republic Square

Carl and Sarah like some of our more experimental (they used the word strange, but I’ll go with experimental) stuff. I’ve recently been playing with mixing color a lot more. By gelling our lights and then shifting the white balance of the photo we get interesting results. This is sort of like the cross processing of the digital photography age.

It’s not a traditional look, but we don’t feel confined by traditional looks. We headed up to the top of our favorite parking garage adjacent to Republic Square.

Frankly, with all the changes in Austin, we are surprised this garage is still there. Regardless, we’ll take advantage of it while we can. It can provide an interesting industrial location for some shoots, but in this case, we were interested in the view of surrounding buildings.

The Paramount Theater

Our final stop was the Paramount Theater on Congress Ave. We continued the experimental direction and had some fun with the downtown lights.

Josh loves a good adventure and some of his favorite wedding and engagement shoots have involved “getting crazy” or going somewhere special to the couple.

Josh is a Texas native and long time Pflugerville resident. He started his photography business in 2009 and has never looked back. His photo business even allowed him to be daddy-day-care before his two sons reached school age. Over the years his business has expanded to include just about every type of photography including automotive, editorial portraits, corporate events, sports and food. Through it all, he has continued to love wedding photography for genuine moment, the fast pace and the diversity of subjects it offers. Warren and Katelyn Hill Country Engagements

June 3, 2017 by Andrew Fritz

It’s no secret. Austin in full of beautiful outdoor locations for engagement shoots. We started out with Warren and Katelyn making some Mt Bonnell engagement photos. We headed to Commons Ford Ranch later in the afternoon We had to dodge some afternoon thunderstorms, but that paid off later on at sunset.

My Bonnell’s cliff top views of Lake Austin make a nice background for engagement photos. The park isn’t large and is frequently very busy on a weekend. With a little hiking we were able to find a quieter spot off the path.

Commons Ford Ranch is one of the hidden gyms around Austin. The open grass fields are a blank canvas for sunset engagement photos. On a day with thunderstorms to add interest to the skies, it can be magical. We loved the long path leading down to the river through the tall brown grass. It begs the question “what is down that path?”

The denuded pecan trees in the pecan bottom provide some nice graphic elements to play with. Normally we don’t think of bare trees very attractive. But in silhouette, they can create nice abstract framing or space filling elements  around the couple.

We always try to bring a as much of the couple’s personality and relationship into the photos as we can. Warren and Katelyn both enjoy a good book so we played with the idea of an afternoon relaxing together with a couple of good books.

When you have clouds like this, just take some pictures. The last light of the sun lit up the underside of the clouds at the horizon. The roiling underside of the approaching thunderstorm creates some nice drama in the background.

Weather is one big variable in a shoot like this. We dodged thunderstorms all afternoon. That is both a blessing and a curse. Right about sunset a couple of bigger storms rolled through providing dramatic skies and a nice backdrop for the photos. We finished our last few engagement photos and then had to make a dash for the cars to avoid a sudden down pour.

Lysts on the Lake – Thursday Practice

April 28, 2011 by Josh Baker

Not a measuring pass

Thursday saw the last day of practice for the jousters in the upcoming Lysts on the Lake. 23 competitors from across North America will be competing in Austin in several mounted disciplines, foremost being the joust. This is a real competition with balsa wood tips, battered shields and blood drawn even in the practice passes.

Golf Anywhere – Creative Project – Austin, Texas

March 2, 2011 by Josh Baker

Fore!

Ivy K and I hit up Austin again this morning at the nice and convenient time of 6:30 AM. Not so bad, unless you have an 8 week old at home. Our theme was morning, and hopefully one that we will be revisiting is “Golf Anywhere”. Why stick to a course when downtown alleyways and scenic hill country vistas are your’s for the taking. Nevermind the sawdust, lack of putting green, or other amenities.
