Yesterday we headed over to Chateau d’Hemphill for a Joust practice in anticipation of the upcoming Lysts on the Lake. A couple of jousters and their squires came out to get used to tacking up horses and handing up lances.
AzulOx Photography is offering a participant photo package for the coming Lysts, more details here.
I have been to a few joust competitions thanks to my always interesting friends. Usually, we have to stay pretty far away in case a horse gets loose and for our safety. But since this was a practice and I knew the horses pretty well, I got a chance to get new angles. The top shot above shows what is standard fare, a telephoto from a safe distance. The next shot is exciting for me, I was close enough to touch the horses and catch dirt as they rode by.

Part of my assignment was to gather a few headshots for the brochure and website. I used my big AlienBee into an octobox in close offset with two 430’s at full power adding the rim light. I was shooting in dappled shadow, because it was noon and about f22, 1/200th, at iso 50. Really bright with not a cloud in the sky in normal speak.

And then we grabbed a few of the Lady of the Court and her steed. And I love a square format.

Enjoy!
