Jay and Samira – A Heart of Texas Ranch Wedding in Marble Falls

February 25, 2019 by Josh Baker

Growing up in a small town south central Texas, I wasn’t exposed to many other cultures. I attended my share of quinceañera, and Tejano culture was about it. Going to college and later living and working in Austin, I’ve had the pleasure of being around many more cultures and seeing them blend together in interesting ways. Jay and Samira’s Heart of Texas Ranch wedding was another great example of that.

This Hindu-Christian fusion wedding wasn’t our first fusion wedding, but we continue to really enjoy the melding of cultures. Each wedding approaches the fusion differently.

Jay and Samira’s wedding stuck to the compact wedding day form used in most US Christian services. You could be forgiven for mistaking a more traditional Hindu wedding as a multi-day festival (which is really what they are). Instead, Jay and Samira had a Sangheet on Friday and a simple service and reception on Saturday.

What is a Sangheet? The word means music, and a Sangheet in this context is a pre-party. There is often a Henna artist at the Sangheet working on the bride, and other female wedding guests.

A First Look

Almost every culture, including Christian and Hindu, have a tradition of keeping the bride and groom separate until the ceremony. It’s suppose to make the ceremony extra special (and also dates back to a time when it might literally have been the first time you saw your new spouse). Some people adhere to the tradition, but many others have started a new tradition: the first look. It gives the couple a chance to have that special moment privately with the exception of the photographers of course.

Wedding Ceremony Under the Oaks

Heart of Texas ranch is nestled in the hill country near Marble Falls. There are few things more ubiquitous in the Texas hill country than live oaks. Jay and Samira had their outdoor wedding ceremony under the canopy of majestic oaks.

Allison and Gabe – Buena Vista Endurance Camp Destination Wedding

October 1, 2018 by Josh Baker

I’ve know Allison and Gabe for a long time, since my days running with rogue in Ausitn. It was a privilege to tag along on their DIY Colorado destination wedding. Their intimate wedding was held at their friends running retreat Camp Endurance in Buena Vista, Colorado.

A DIY Colorado Destination Wedding

Allison and Gabe are runners and co-founders of Rogue Expeditions. Having a wedding at an endurance running camp made perfect sense. The location is pretty spectacular with the adobe house anchoring the large property.

Everyone Pitches In

Small and intimate DIY weddings are some of our favorites. A group of friends and family comes together. Everyone pitches in. It is the essence of what a great wedding should be with none of the extra fanfare that accompanies so many weddings today. Just good friends and good times to start a marriage.

I love the custom stole with pictures of Allison and Gave on it. It adds an nice and unique twist.

It was a chill wedding with everyone helping and hanging around. Nothing like a Shiner before the ceremony!

The Ceremony

I love the gidy excitement of intimate weddings like this. The relaxed atmosphere gives so much more space for spontaneous moments between the couple and between the couple and the guests.

One thing about ceremonies like this one, you never know what the weather is going to do. Allison and Gabe ended up with overcast dramatic clouds which is a win.

It is kind of hard to beat the backdrop at a location like this up in the mountains in Colorado.

A Laid-Back Reception

As you might expect at an intimate DIY wedding like this, the reception was pretty laid-back. Allison and Gabe receive toasts at their wedding.

After the (messy) cake based fun, everyone just hung out and chilled. It was an evening of good times, good food and drink and good friends.

Claire and Eric’s Santa Clarita California Golden Hour Wedding

September 3, 2018 by Andrew Fritz

Claire and Eric’s wedding is the end of an era for us. Claire is the last of the three Christiansen sisters to get married and we’ve been there for all three. It’s truly been an honor and a privilege. Each of the three weddings has been unique and matched the couple perfectly. Clair and Eric had a golden hour wedding at his parents home in Santa Clarita. It was a great way to end the Christiansen trilogy.

If you want to see Claire’s sister’s weddings, here are the links: Katie and Adi | Alicia and Colin.

Claire and Eric Private Santa Clarita Home Sunset Wedding Portrait

It’s hard to argue with light like this… Eric’s family home is a beautiful space and it is filled with golden light in the afternoon.

Getting Ready

Wedding dress hanging in under construction door.
Wedding dress against beautiful blue wall.
Brides shoes next to the under construction door.

You might wonder why a wedding dress is hanging in a uninstalled door. Claire and Eric’s wedding was being held at Eric’s family home and they built a new barn just for the event. Of course it happened that the barn wasn’t 100% finished yet. The walls were still open so the wedding had a rustic/real feel to it. You’ll see the unfinished walls in the reception photos.

Claire got ready at a nearby hotel and they were remodeling one of their floors. The construction team had built and set this door in the hall to block off the wing under construction. The congruence with the barn was too good to pass up. As a bonus, there was beautiful light streaming in from the windows by the elevators.

Alicia prepares to do her twin sisters makeup for the wedding.

Claire’s twin sister Alicia (who’s wedding we photographed last year) works in the wedding industry now and handled Claire’s makeup.

Sisters and brides maids help bride put on her dress.

One thing about the Christiansen woman, they are almost always laughing, smiling or crying with joy.

Mom is excited while the bride gets ready.

We photographed Katie’s wedding back in 2015 in Beverly Hills.

To the Barn

The barn is new, built for the wedding and as happens with construction projects, it wasn’t finished totally on time. The unfinished interior didn’t dampen the festivities one bit. If anything it added a metric ton of character to the night.

The barn built just for the wedding.

It turns out that, when your husband to be gives you a sweet letter, people cry which can lead to makeup issues. A fan can fix that problem quick as Claire demonstrated.

You never know what conditions you are going to get during a wedding, but it’s hard to do anything other than take great pictures with light like this. The California sun and dust in the sky caused everything to glow golden. Weddings like this define “Golden Hour.”

The Peter and Emily Story – Mercury Hall Swing Dance Wedding

January 30, 2018 by Stacy Wells

Emily and Peter Wedding - Mercury Hall -

How often do you hear about a swing dance wedding? I met Emily through the Lindy Hop scene dancing and photographing Lindy Hop events around the country. She teaches swing dancing (among other dance forms) all over the world. Peter too is a dancer. When they reached out to me to photograph their Mercury Hall wedding I was very excited, being a dancer myself. Their swing dance wedding brought back memories of my own. It was a beautiful wedding, memories were shared, new memories made, and everyone danced the night away.

Emily was glowing the entire day, bursting through the seams with excitement. It was contagious!

Mercury Hall  is a beautiful venue,  and it’s a short drive from downtown Austin. The grounds are small, but include a canopy of green live oak trees year around.

Celebratory toast were had,and stories were shared to start the evening off right. Celebrating not only the two getting married, but also their family and friends coming together.

Emily and Peter Wedding - Mercury Hall -

This Swing dance wedding was epic, you felt like you were on set for some Hollywood movie. Emily and Peter had a live swing band and many of their guests were also swing dancers. Everyone knew what to do, nobody skipped a beat like it was choreographed.  Mercury Hall’s hard wood floors made a perfect dance floor.

This wedding definitely went down in our record books.  It was our first swing dancing wedding, and hopefully not our last.  Emily and Peter, swinging into the next chapter of their lives, picture perfect wedding.

The End….

Jacob and Hillary Wedding – Private Family Ranch

January 16, 2018 by Stacy Wells

Jacob and Hillary’s wedding took us to a Private Family Ranch in Gainesville, TX.   Gainesville is a smaller town North of Dallas.  You could actually end up in Oklahoma if you managed to get lost, since it’s only 12 miles North of our final destination.  We had the opportunity to spend 2 days with their friends and family while we captured the memories and festivities.  The first evening was the Rehearsal Dinner, and was full of laughs and tasty BBQ.  After putting ourselves in a food coma, we got plenty of rest for following big day.  As we arrived to the Family Ranch, everyone was running around staying busy helping making the final touches and adding some Texas Charm.

The Family Ranch was beautiful. You could see the trees scattered around the countryside for miles.  The weather couldn’t have been more perfect.

When given the chance to get a “Birds eye view”, we didn’t’ hesitate.  After a crash course on how to operate the Scissor Stand, I was ready to get airborne. I quickly got over my fear of heights, while being suspended in a metal bucket 30ft in the air.
